The expectation of world leaders is to dress professionally — they are representing their countries after all. However, one of them is breaking the rules slightly. That is none other than the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, best known for the wacky statement socks he’s worn on various diplomatic and media events.
Justin Trudeau has always been loud and proud with his fun socks, showing them off wherever he goes. You will almost never find him out and about with a pair of plain-colored socks; even his more “normal” socks are always colorful and patterned. His love for fun statement socks is so well-known that he has received them as gifts on various occasions.
Here are some of the funkiest Justin Trudeau socks that definitely break the norm.
Trudeau has been known to be an avid Star Wars fan since young and it shows in his sock choices. He wore a pair of R2-D2 and C-3PO socks to commemorate Star Wars Day on May the Fourth while meeting the former Irish Prime Minister in 2017.
He was also been spotted wearing Chewbacca socks during a visit to New York City later that year.
People also managed to spot the PM wearing this pair of Darth Vader socks during a diplomatic trip to India.
Trudeau has been spotted with these patriotic maple leaf socks on many public events.
He also owns a truly-Canadian pair of blue and yellow moose socks.
The really WTF socks
Trudeau went viral for sporting these bright purple socks with yellow ducks at last year’s World Economic Forum.
He also seems to have a few pairs of colorful socks with skulls and crossbones on them.
You’ve heard of fashion diplomacy — using fashion to cleverly deliver a message. Similarly, Trudeau’s colored socks are sometimes not just wild designs but they carry meaning and significance.
He wore this pair of rainbow stripey socks with the words Eid Mubarak (an Arabic greeting Muslims exchange at the end of their holy fasting month Ramadan) to attend the Pride Parade in Toronto. Coincidentally, the event took place during the religious holiday so Trudeau commemorated both festivals with his unique socks.
He has two pairs of colored socks with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) logo on them, one pair in blue and another in pink.
Forming international relations
His love for fun socks has even spread to other fellow political leaders. During a visit to Ireland, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar upstaged Trudeau’s grey-and-white striped socks with his own bright red Canadian-themed socks. He also gifted Trudeau with a custom rugby jersey and a pair of Irish socks.
When he met with British Columbia Premier John Horgan, the two close friends both wore fun socks of their own. Horgan wore socks with planets on them and Trudeau wore bright blue socks with instructions to make a gin and tonic.
This promotes a close relationship between both parties as it balances out the heaviness of politics with something more lighthearted to break the ice with. Who says politics always has to be so serious?
Trudeau’s “sock diplomacy” is a very subtle yet clever way to convey a message. People rarely notice socks so when they’re the only elements of your outfit that stand out, they naturally draw attention. Whether it be showing support for a cause or paying homage to an event, Trudeau always manages to strike up a conversation around his socks.
Add a little fun to your outfits
It’s been drilled into our societal norms that the modern man has to look smart and professional. It makes you look more presentable and gives the impression that you take your job seriously. That’s not to say that you can’t turn your regular work outfits into something more fun.
If getting your own “Justin Trudeau socks” is too much for you, you can change up your formal or business casual office attire in different ways. Try out a bright-colored or patterned shirt or jacket that will help you stand out from the other drab neutral and dark colors.
You can play around with your choice of accessories as well. Put on a tie or pocket square with fun colors or an interesting pattern to add a pop of color and quirkiness. Look for novelty cufflinks that have interesting and creative designs. They’re a great way to show off your personality and can make great conversation starters too!
Rather than sticking to a boring backpack or leather briefcase, choose one that has some interesting accents or comes in a unique design. If for some reason you can’t wear any loud colors for work, your bag can actually help to add some color and variety to your work outfit.

Play by the rules
Of course, do take into consideration your individual company’s dress code. Different companies might require their employees to dress in a certain style or color so do keep that in mind when making your outfit decisions.
If you’re going for an event, like a meeting or a business dinner, that has a specific dress code, keep that in mind as well and work around it. Take into account the nature of the event too — is it a very important meeting or just a casual catch-up session with a client? You don’t want to come off as too informally dressed for the occasion.
It’s okay to be unconventional
Whether you choose to follow in Mr Trudeau’s footsteps (quite literally) or not, it’s perfectly okay to break out of the conventions and try making your work attire more “you”. It’s all about non-verbal communication — how you dress can say a lot about your personality and mood. It influences how others perceive you and that in turn can affect how they feel around you as well.
Feel free to experiment with different styles and clothing combinations to find one that fits you best. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. If you’ve been wanting to try on that pink shirt for work, by all means, go for it! Most importantly, whatever style you choose to rock, wear it with confidence!
